Our Namesake

Dubiski

John Dubiski was born September 23, 1946 in Baytown, Texas. He began his education in Corsicana, Texas where he attended elementary school, then went on to attend Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle School and South Oak Cliff High School. John graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce with a Bachelors of Science degree, and began teaching history at Grand Prairie High School in 1968. He continued to further his education with Masters degrees from ETSU and SMU, and later served as Assistant Principal at Grand Prairie High School until moving on to try his hand as a business owner.

John Dubiski‘s passion for working with students called him back to Grand Prairie as the first In-School Suspension teacher in the district at Jackson Middle School. Throughout his career, John continually found ways to help struggling students. He served as an Assistant Principal at South Grand Prairie High School and as Dean of Instruction at Grand Prairie High School where he took great pride in creating a master schedule with a high percentage of accuracy. In fact, he became known as “an expert” because of his attention to detail in scheduling. John was Principal at Truman Middle School, finishing his first career in GPISD, when he officially retired in 2004.

A new chapter began for John Dubiski as he began working for his alma mater, ETSU, in their alternative teaching program. John mentored new teachers on numerous campuses in Dallas County and served as president of the local chapter of the Retired Teachers Association. During this time, he also began volunteering in the library at Daniels Academy. One of his most notable and rewarding accomplishments was creating a successful reading program targeting third graders at Daniels, for which he received the NAACP Educational Leadership Award for his volunteer efforts. Coming out of retirement, John Dubiski accompanied his friend and fellow administrator, Mr. Calvin Harrison, to Adams Middle School, where he served as Assistant Principal.

While he was a phenomenal educator, John was also a wonderful husband to his wife, Monica, and an amazing father to his two sons, John Brian and Andrew Marshall. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren, Madison and Ty. John had a great appreciation for the outdoors and loved hunting and camping in the Texas hill country.

John Dubiski passed away on August 19, 2007. He will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor, his insightful grasp of the world around him, his gift of gab, and his genuinely warm and caring spirit. John was a friend and mentor to countless teachers and students. Grand Prairie ISD is honored to memorialize his more than 30 years of loving service to the students of our district.
