Dubiski Career High School is proud to offer AVID. AVID is a structured, college preparatory program. This program will help you to do rigorous work and meet or exceed high standards in all subjects. You will develop as thinkers, writers and readers, but most of all – you will develop habits, skills and behaviors to use in High School and in College.
What does Rigorous mean?
Rigor is the goal of helping students develop the capacity to understand content that is complex and challenging. It is an opportunity for you to do the most challenging work that you can handle. Taking RIGOROUS courses OPENS DOORS!!!
What happens in AVID?
In half of our classes, we will learn to take college-level notes, organize materials, improve time management, work on test taking skills, improve writing skills, etc. In the other half of our classes, we will work in small tutoring groups, assisted by college students, to help you improve your understanding of your coursework and college. We will also tour colleges, hear guest speakers, and explore college opportunities.
If I am interested, what do I have to do?
1) Keep in mind that you must first be accepted into Dubiski Career High School. Also note that we have a limited number of slots and not everyone who applies will be accepted into AVID.
2) If you have already been accepted and registered at Dubiski, click on the right side of this page for the AVID application link. Fill out that application completely.
3) We will contact you about the interview that will take place for selected individuals during the first week of June.
4) You will be notified by mail about whether or not you have been accepted.
5) Those that are accepted will be contacted about changing your schedule for next year to include AVID. You must also be enrolled in a Pre-AP course to be in AVID. If you are not already registered for one, we will change that as well.
This is a big commitment for next year.
1) You will be in a special elective class next year.
2) You will be required to maintain good citizenship and good attendance at school.
3) You will be required to maintain enrollment in your Pre-AP classes.
4) You must keep an AVID binder.
5) You must take special Cornell notes in each class.
6) You will agree to participate in all tutoring with college tutors.
7) You will agree to have a positive attitude about the challenges of the AVID program.
Be sure that this is for you!!! We will prepare you to be successful in High School and get ready to enroll in college when you finish High School. This program is NOT FOR EVERYONE!!! You have to WANT TO DO THIS!!! If you have any questions that were not answered today in our assembly OR your parents have any questions, please talk to Mike Mozingo at SGP 9th Grade Center (mike.mozingo@gpisd.org).
